BOLSOVER, AND THE
VILLAGES OF CRESWELL, ELMTON, PLEASLEY, SCARCLIFFE
AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
BOLSOVER, once a market town, in the
hundred of Scarsdale, is 145 miles from London, 53 from Manchester, 24 from
Derby, 12 from Matlock, and 6 from Chesterfield.
It is situated on the side of a very steep hill, is well built, and
commands extensive views. The Duke
of Portland is Lord of the Manor, and holds a court every three weeks at which
is recoverable debts under 40s. At Ladyday and Michaelmas are two great courts;
a jury of copyholders and freeholders are there impanelled; and at one of these
are constables and head borough chosen. The
church is a vicarage in the patronage of the Duke, and in the Incumbancy of the
Reverend Calcroft-Tinsley. In
the church is a noble monument, in memory of the first Sir Charles Cavendish;
erected by his widow and his two surviving sons.
Here are a chapel for the Calvinists and one for the Wesleyan Methodists,
and a free school, with a small endowment, for the education of six poor boys. This town was once noted for its manufacture of buckles of a
particular sort, but that branch has long declined; agriculture being now the
chief occupation of the labouring class. Bolsover
still is possessed of a charter for a market, but it is not made available.
A small fair is held on the 24th June for pedlary &c.
The number of inhabitants in the parish, in 1821, was 1,244.
CRESSWELL village is partly in the
parish of Whitwell, and partly in that of Elmton, 11 miles N.E.
of Chesterfield and 5 miles S.W. of Retford.
The Rev. C. H. Rhodes is lord of the manor.
ELMTON, a parish in the same hundred as
Bolsover, 8 miles E of
Chesterfield and 6 from Castleton, contains a church in the patronage of the
Rev. C.H. Rhodes: the incumbent is the Rev. Francis Foxlove. This was the birthplace of Jedediah Buxton, the great
calculator. The parish contains 350
inhabitants.
PLEASLEY, a parish in Scarsdale hundred,
is 3 miles n.n.w. from Mansfield and 2 miles from
Glapwell, contains a church, and about 530 inhabitants.
Here are two fairs in the year, viz. May 6th and October 29th,
for horses, cattle and sheep.
SCARCLIFFE, is a parish and a village, 8
miles S.E.
from Chesterfield.
The Earl Bathurst is lord of the manor; and the patronage of the
church, which is a vicarage, is in the Duke of Devonshire.
The parish contains about 500 inhabitants.
