The Gough Family of Newhall, Derbyshire |
The Gough Family of Newhall all descend from Thomas Gough who first appears in the Parish Registers for Stapenhill in 1789. No Goughs appear in the registers until then. According to Mr. VA Shaw of Swadlincote in his "History of Newhall", Thomas Gough came from the Forest of Dean area of Gloucestershire, with a gang of men "prospecting for coal". He, in turn, had this information from an article in the Burton Mail (2nd April 1961) by a journalist called Joe Woodford who had interviewed a Mr. Jabez Gough, a postman of Newhall, about his collection of Gresley Blue China plates which had been the property of his great grandfather Thomas Gough. I have no idea where in the Forest of Dean Thomas came from although there are Goughs recorded in Michaeldean, St Briavels, Little Dean and Bream.
Thomas Gough was married to Sarah Boddis at Stapenhill, there being no church then at Newhall, on 5th November 1789, the banns were read on 18th and 25th October and 1st November. Thomas signed his own name I have found four children to this marriage - Benjamin baptized 29th August 1790, Ann baptized 23rd December 1792, Elizabeth baptized 8th March 1795 and Mary baptized 15th July 1798. Sarah died in March 1802. Thomas was married again in October 1803 to a Margaret Brierley. Thomas died in 1812 and was buried on 28th April that year. Margaret Gough appears living alone, a widow aged 80, in the 1851 census for Newhall. She died in 1854 and was buried on 6th December aged 84.
Benjamin was my great great great grandfather he married Hannah Bridge on 4th October 1813, they had nine children the third of which, Benjamin, was my great great grandfather. This Benjamin was married three times firstly to Rosanna Chell in November 1841. My great grandfather Robert Gough was their third child, born 16th October 1845. Others were William, Jabez, Maria, John and Benjamin. Rosanna died in April 1858. Benjamin married again firstly to Ann Bridge and then to Elizabeth Staley. (Both Rosanna & Ann appear to have died soon after the birth of a child). Robert Gough married Sarah Ann Gutteridge on 25th December 1876. They had eight children the eldest of which was my grandfather Henry Gough, baptized 2nd February 1879, the other children were Harriett, Mary, Edith, Fanny, Clara, Ann & Robert. Henry married Rose Edwards on 5th August 1901.
