| The Young Family |
My great-great grandfather Alexander Young was born in Loughborough, Leicestershire on 7th January 1834. His father was John Young and his mother was Maria Parkinson who were married on 9th April 1826 at All Saints, Loughborough. Other children were Robert born 13th February 1828, Sarah Ann born 30th June 1830, Elizabeth born 10th April 1832, and John born 7th February 1836. All five children were christened on the same day, 11th September 1836, at the Dead Lane Primitive Methodist Church, Loughborough. There were two earlier children who both died as infants John buried 6th April 1827 and Elizabeth buried 8th November 1829 both at Loughborough All Saints.
On the 1851 Census John Young gives his birthplace as Fifeshire in Scotland, and his occupation as Tailor, he would have been born in 1802 or 1803. Maria gives her birthplace as Loughborough. In 1851 the family is living at 112 Regent Street, Loughborough. The elder son Robert isn’t living at home but the next four are still at home and there are four more children Grace, Phoebe, Elizabeth and Mary. There is a query here over the two Elizabeths – (on a later census the second one is Eliza and they had already lost one Elizabeth in infancy). In 1861 John and Maria are living at Flewitt Street, St Mary, Nottingham with the three youngest girls, Phoebe, Eliza and Maria who are all working as lace finishers. John Young’s birthplace is just listed as Scotland so still no clue as to where in Fifeshire he was born.
In 1861 Alexander, my great-great grandfather is living at Little John Street, St Mary’s, Nottingham with his wife Rebecca (nee Webb) daughter of Francis Webb and Mary Palmer, born 13th August 1834. Basford, and two children, Francis age 3 and Alexander age 5 months. He gives his occupation as Tailor. Sometime between 1861 and 1871 the family moved to Ilkeston in Derbyshire and on the 1871 Census were living at 14 Extension Street with their children, Francis, Elizabeth, Cecilia (sic) (my great grandmother) and Anna Mary. Little Alexander is not listed as being at home with the family on Census day, was he staying elsewhere or had he died young? By the1871 Census John Young has died and Maria is staying with her daughter Eliza and son-in-law Francis Gregory at Rose Cottage Yard, Hunt Street, Long Eaton, Derbys. There is a record of a burial of a Maria Young, Widow aged 70 who died 13th December 1875 in Loughborough Cemetery. Could this be her?
On the 1881 census Alexander, Rebecca and family are living at 3 Belvoir Street, Ilkeston. Present in the household are Francis, Elizabeth, Cecelia (sic) and Isaac – a grandson of 5 days old. (I think he must have been the illegitimate son of Elizabeth because she later marries an Isaac Beardsley). By 1891 my great- grandmother Celia Young has married William Edward Limb (see Limb Family notes) and they are living in Ilkeston at 7 Chapel Street with four sons, Alexander J (my grandfather), Alfred W, Francis H, and Arthur. Francis Young is married and living at 7 Cranmer/Grammer (sp) Street with wife Annie and various family members but no children. Great –grandfather Alexander is now a widower and living with daughter Annie (Anna), his son-in-law William Baggaley and their two sons. He is still living with this family in 1901.
Also still living in Ilkeston are Isaac and Elizabeth Beardsley and their seven children. Francis and his wife Annie have moved to Ryhill, Yorkshire, they have a boarder at the dwelling but no children present. My great grandparents William Edward and Celia Limb have moved to Shirebrook, Derbyshire (see Limb Family notes).
I think Alexander Young died September Qtr 1903 but have yet to verify this. The Ryhill Youngs, the Beardsleys and Baggaleys were all present at the funeral of my great-grandfather William Edward Limb in 1907 (see Limb family notes).
